How to Prepare for Your Photo Session: Look and Feel Your Best
Your session is coming up, and we couldn't be more excited to capture it with you! Before we say anything else, here's the most important thing to know: the best photos come from you simply being yourself, relaxed, comfortable, and present. You don't need to be "camera ready" in any fussy way. That said, a little gentle preparation in the days leading up to your session can help you feel your most confident and look refreshed and rested. Here are our favorite tips.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
If there's one thing that makes a difference, it's water. Well-hydrated skin looks plumper, brighter, and more even. Here in the Arizona desert, our dry air makes hydration matter even more. The trick is to start a few days ahead rather than just the morning of, so your skin has time to drink it in. Keep a water bottle nearby in the days before your session and sip throughout the day. Your skin, and your energy, will thank you.
Get a good night's sleep
Try to get a full, restful night's sleep the night before your session. Good sleep is what gives you bright eyes and a refreshed, rested look, and it does wonders for reducing puffiness and shadows under the eyes. Just as helpful, walking in well-rested means you'll feel calmer and more like yourself in front of the camera, which always shows in the photos.
Eat to feel comfortable and energized
You'll feel your best when you're comfortable, so in the day or two before your session, you might go easy on very salty or heavily processed foods and carbonated or fizzy drinks, which can sometimes leave you feeling a little puffy or bloated. Going lighter on alcohol the night before helps too, since it can be dehydrating and undo some of that good water you've been drinking.
Please don't overthink this or skip meals, though, that's the opposite of what helps. Feeling energized and nourished matters far more than anything else, so do eat normally, and have a light meal or snack before you arrive so you're comfortable, fueled, and ready to enjoy the experience.
Give your skin a little love
A few simple skin habits in the days before can leave you glowing:
· Moisturize daily. Keep your skin and lips hydrated in the days leading up, and don't forget a good lip balm. Soft, moisturized skin photographs beautifully.
· Exfoliate gently, but not last-minute. A gentle exfoliation a couple of days before can leave skin smooth and fresh. Just avoid doing it the day of, so there's no chance of redness or irritation showing up.
· Don't try anything brand new. The week of your session is not the time to test a new skincare product, facial, or treatment, since skin can react unpredictably. Stick with what you know your skin already loves.
· Protect yourself from the sun. This is a big one in Tucson! Try to avoid fresh sunburn or new tan lines in the days before and wear your sunscreen. Calm, even skin is the easiest to photograph.
· Time any facials or treatments thoughtfully. If you love a good facial, schedule it about a week ahead rather than the day before, giving your skin time to settle and glow.
A few finishing touches
If a haircut or color is part of your plan, aim for about one to two weeks before your session rather than the day before, so everything looks settled and natural. If your hands might be in frame, a quick nail tidy-up is a nice touch. And it never hurts to bring a small kit for the day, lip balm, a comb or brush, a little powder, and a bottle of water for touch-ups between shots. If your eyes tend to get red or tired, a bottle of eye drops can be a small lifesaver.
Most of all, relax and have fun
Here's our honest secret: the photos people treasure most are the ones where they look genuinely happy and at ease, not perfectly posed. So, take a deep breath, come as you are, and trust us to guide you through it. We'll handle the rest, and we'll have some fun along the way.
